Die geo-strategische Lage von Atjeh an der Nordspitze von Sumatra erlaubt die Kontrolle der Meerenge von Malacca von Norden her und ist als ausgesprochen günstig zu bezeichnen. Wahrscheinlich um dieser Lage ein auch wirtschaftliches Fundament zu geben, haben die Sultane von Akjeh über fünf Jahrhunderte Goldmünzen für den Fernhandel herausgegeben. Da Gold Mangelware war erlebten die kleinen, Kupang genannten Münzen mit etwa 0,7 g Gold eine sehr weite Zirkulation.
Geldgeschichtlich sind diese Münzen daher von hoher Bedeutung, was durch die meisterhafte Kaligraphie ihrer Ausführung unterstrichen wird. Die Eleganz und Harmonie der Kaligraphie ist überragend und macht die Münzen zu Kleinkunstwerken. Die in dieser Sammlung angebotenen acht Münzen decken zeitlich das 14. Jahrhundert bis zum 18. Jahrhundert ab und stellen einen repräsentativen Querschnitt dar.

The gold issues of Acjeh have been outlined by various authors (among them M. Mitchiner. The history and coinage of South East Asia until the fifteenth century. Hawkins Publications; London, 1998). Current historical opinion suggets loosely organized commercial alliances between cities of the Indonesian archiplego, in which these cities assisted each other, not neglecting their own interests, in trade and commerce. Gold coins for far trade were in short supply, and thus these kupangs varying around 0.7 g of gold were in wide circulation. Thus this coinage represents the exception of the current coinage of this area. Banda Acjeh has gained international attention after the massive tsunami wave in 2007. From the stand point of money history this coinage is therefore exceptional and enticing. The elegance and harmony of caligraphy is remarkable.
The represented collection is a nice variety study of this coinage dating from the 14th century to the 18th century representing eight different rulers of the region.
