Pixodaros war der jüngste Sohn des Hekatomnos; nach dem Tod seines Bruders Hidrieus verdrängte er dessen Gemahlin Ada von der Regierung. Der Revers des Stückes zeigt jenen Gott, dessen Kult sich die Hekatomniden zu ihrem Familienkult erkoren hatten: Zeus Labraundos. Das Heiligtum des Gottes lag in Labranda bzw. Labraunda, einem 68 Stadien von Mylasa entfernten Ort. Das Doppelbeil soll der Kultlegende nach jenes sein, welches Herakles der Amazonenkönigin Hippolyte abgerungen und der Omphale geschenkt hatte, von dieser soll es an die lydischen Könige übergegangen sein; schließlich soll es von Gyges als Votiv an das Heiligtum des Zeus Labraundos übergeben worden sein.

Pixodaros was the youngest son of Hekatomnos; after the death of his brother Hidrieus, he ousted the latter’s wife Ada from the throne. The reverse of the piece depicts the god whom the Hecatomnid dynasty had chosen to worship as part of their family cult: Zeus Labraundos. The god’s temple was located in Labranda or Labraunda, 68 stadia away from Mylasa. According to legend, the double-bladed ax is the one that Heracles wrested from the Amazon queen Hippolyte and gave to Omphale, from whom it is said to have passed to the kings of Lydia; finally, the ax was given by Gyges as a votive offering at the temple of Zeus Labraundos.
